Afanasieff spent a significant part of his career creating music with Mariah Carey, and had a role in many of Carey’s most successful songs, including “Hero,” which he produced, co-wrote, and on which he played all of the music tracks.
In a career spanning over two decades, Carey has sold more than 200 million albums, singles, and videos worldwide, making her one of the world's best-selling music artists. Carey conceived Emotions, her second album, as an homage to Motown soul music (see Motown Sound), and she worked with Walter Afanasieff.
The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) certified Music Box by American recording artist Mariah Carey as diamond. Music Box remains Carey's highest seller and one of the best-selling albums of all time, with worldwide sales of over 32 million copies.
